UBC Palestine Timeline

Welcome to the UBC Palestine Timeline.

This project attempts to document the long, disjointed, powerful history of the solidarity movement with Palestine at UBC. Using the tabs at the top of the page, please navigate through the project, beginning with the roundtable interview with Dr Mark Ayyash and Dr Sheryl Nestel. It is intended to serve as the context for this movement’s broader history in Canada.

The timeline itself spans the last two decades of organizing for Palestine at UBC. It contains interviews, archival research, and popular media sources. To learn more about how they were collected and what was included (and excluded), consult the “methodology” tab. The “interviews” tab has long-form versions of the interviews conducted for this project. Finally, the “about” tab concerns my personal motivations in pursuing this project.

As an introductory note, this project has a distinct position. I have been a member of several groups on campus organizing for Palestine since arriving at UBC. I have sought to be honest in my characterization of the movement’s many facets and members. I am not impartial or objective, however. This is a personal history, one undertaken because of interest, passion, and care. It is very intentionally a history I can participate in, for it would feel disingenuous to tell any other kind of story with such authority. My hope, is that this project serves to connect the members of groups fighting for freedom in Palestine to their very recent but often unknown past. In my experience, it helps remind us how numerous and powerful we are. Free Palestine.
